Columbia Summer Program Law

For Advanced Law Students and Professionals | For more than 50 years, students and professionals from all over the world have joined us in the picturesque Dutch cities of Leiden or Amsterdam for the Columbia Summer Program to learn about all aspects of American Law taught by distinguished Professors from Columbia University, New York.

Course information

The program is held in alternate summers, for the full month of July, in Leiden and Amsterdam. In 2018 the program will be held in Leiden from 2 to 27 July 2018.

At the end of the Program, students are awarded a Certificate of Participation. If they wish to take a final examination, they may obtain 5 EC (European credits, ECTS) toward degrees at their home universities. For Dutch lawyers, participating in the program, it is possible to obtain NOvA credits accredited by the Dutch Bar Association. Target audience

Law graduates, who are professionally active in the practice of law, industry, commerce, government, international organizations or related activities are eligible for admission to the Summer Program. Law students in an advanced phase of their studies may also be admitted.

Academic content

The courses cover various aspects of American Law. In addition to four mandatory courses, students are also required to complete at least two of the elective courses.

Why this program?

This Summer Program is a unique opportunity to learn from distinguished Professors from Columbia University and to gain a deep understanding of many facets of American Law. The Program also includes a Moot Court. It is furthermore an opportunity to learn in an international classroom, with participants from more than 25 countries. And last but not least, the picturesque cities of Leiden and Amsterdam are wonderful places to stay!

Course fees

The course fee for 2018 is €3800. For those who are currently enrolled in full-time education, the fee is of €2950. For applications submitted before 1 February 2018 an "Early-bird" discount applies. "Early-bird" students pay €2700 and "Early-bird" professionals pay €3550. For students of the University of Amsterdam and Leiden University the ''Early-bird'' discount is not available (see below).

For UvA and Leiden University students
A limited number of places on the program are available for UvA and Leiden University students. The fee is then €1500, but accommodation is not included. These will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

What's included?
The fee covers tuition, accommodation (except for UvA and Leiden students), study materials for courses and all administrative expenses, including those of the extracurricular activities, lunches (4 times a week) and farewell dinner.
